एडसन का जन्म अंगोला के ठीक स्वतंत्र होने के बाद वहाँ हुआ था। वह बहुत लंबा लड़का था। अपनी लंबाई के कारण वह सबसे अलग दिखता था। जो लोग गृह युद्ध में सैनिकों के रूप में लड़ने के लिए बच्चों को हथियार दे रहे थे, वे उसके जैसे लड़कों की तलाश में थे।
Edson was born in Angola, just after the country became independent. He was a very tall boy. Because of his height he stood out. The people who were giving weapons to children to fight as soldiers in the civil war wanted boys like him.
उसकी माँ को डर था कि वे उसे ले जाएँगे, इसलिए उसने उसे एक चाची के साथ पुर्तगाल में रहने के लिए भेजने का फ़ैसला किया। उसने सोचा कि वह वहाँ सुरक्षित रहेगा।
His mother was afraid they would take him, so she decided to send him to live in Portugal with an aunt. She thought he would be safe there.
एडसन के लिए वहाँ एक नई शुरुआत करना बहुत मुश्किल था क्योंकि वह अपने घर का गर्म मौसम, पारंपरिक खाना और सबसे ज़्यादा अपनी माँ के लाड प्यार को बहुत याद करता था।
It was very difficult to begin with, as Edson missed the warm weather, the traditional food and, most of all, his mother’s hugs and kisses.
वह अच्छे से पुर्तगाली नहीं बोल पाता था और उसे अपनी कक्षाओं और अपने सहपाठियों की बातचीत को समझना बहुत मुश्किल लगता था। उसे लगा कि पुर्तगाल आना एक अच्छा विचार है भी या नहीं।
He did not speak Portuguese well and found it very hard to follow his classes and the conversations of his classmates. He wondered if it was a good idea to come to Portugal after all.
एक दिन एक शिक्षक ने गौर किया कि वह बास्केटबॉल में अच्छा है। वह एक बास्केटबॉल टीम में शामिल हो गया और उसे उसमें काफ़ी कामयाबी मिली। वह स्कूल में लोकप्रिय हो गया और उसने दोस्त बनाए। अब वह पहले से अधिक आत्मविश्वासी है।
One day a teacher noticed how good he was at basketball. He joined a basketball team and was very successful. He became popular at school and made friends. He also became more confident.
अब जब वह एक वयस्क हो चुका है, एडसन उन शरणार्थी बच्चों और अन्य लोगों को प्रशिक्षित करता है जिन्हें समाज से बाहर किए जाने का ख़तरा है। एक बार, उसकी लंबाई ने उसके लिए बाल सैनिक बनने का ख़तरा पैदा कर दिया था। अब उसकी यही लंबाई उसे दूसरों को सुरक्षित महसूस करवाने की ताकत देती है।
Now that he is an adult, Edson trains refugee children and others at risk of being excluded from society. Once, his height put him in danger of becoming a child soldier. Now, his height gives him strength to help others feel safe.
