Edson was born in Angola, just after the country became independent. He was a very tall boy. Because of his height he stood out. The people who were giving weapons to children to fight as soldiers in the civil war wanted boys like him.
Edson è nato in Angola, subito dopo l’indipendenza del paese. Era un ragazzo molto alto. Per la sua altezza, spiccava tra la gente. Quelli che davano armi ai bambini per farne soldati nella guerra civile cercavano ragazzi come lui.
His mother was afraid they would take him, so she decided to send him to live in Portugal with an aunt. She thought he would be safe there.
Sua madre temeva che lo prendessero, così ha deciso di mandarlo a vivere in Portogallo con una zia. Pensava che lì sarebbe stato al sicuro.
It was very difficult to begin with, as Edson missed the warm weather, the traditional food and, most of all, his mother’s hugs and kisses.
All’inizio fu molto difficile, a Edson mancavano il clima caldo, il cibo tradizionale e soprattutto i baci e gli abbracci della madre.
He did not speak Portuguese well and found it very hard to follow his classes and the conversations of his classmates. He wondered if it was a good idea to come to Portugal after all.
Lui non parlava bene il portoghese ed aveva difficoltà a seguire le lezioni e le conversazioni dei compagni di classe. Si chiedeva se, dopo tutto, fosse stata una buona idea trasferirsi in Portogallo.
One day a teacher noticed how good he was at basketball. He joined a basketball team and was very successful. He became popular at school and made friends. He also became more confident.
Un giorno un insegnante si accorse di quanto fosse bravo a giocare a basket. Allora è entrato in una squadra di basket e ha avuto un gran successo. È diventato popolare a scuola e ha fatto amicizie. È anche diventato più sicuro di sé.
Now that he is an adult, Edson trains refugee children and others at risk of being excluded from society. Once, his height put him in danger of becoming a child soldier. Now, his height gives him strength to help others feel safe.
Ora che è adulto, Edson allena ragazzi rifugiati ed altre persone a rischio di emarginazione sociale. Un tempo per la sua altezza aveva rischiato di diventare un bambino soldato. Adesso, la sua altezza gli dà la forza di aiutare gli altri a sentirsi al sicuro.
