Yulia, soțul ei și mica lor fiică locuiau într-un sat mic și liniștit din Ucraina. Yulia iubea să fie trezită în fiecare dimineață de sunetul păsărilor. Nu s-a gândit niciodată că va locui departe de casă sau că nu va fi trezită de sunetul păsărilor dimineața.
Yulia, her husband, and their little daughter lived in a small, quiet village in Ukraine. Yulia loved being woken every morning by the sound of birds. She never thought she would live far away from home, or not be woken up by the sound of birds in the morning.
Soțul ei se plângea mereu că nu au destui bani și a început să bea mult. Au decis să-și încerce norocul în Portugalia. Poate că acolo ar putea câștiga mai mulți bani pentru a-și construi o casă și pentru a face un viitor mai bun pentru familia lor.
Her husband was always complaining about not having enough money and he began drinking heavily. They decided to try their luck in Portugal. Maybe there they could earn more money to build a house and make a better future for their family.
Yulia s-a adaptat bine la noua ei casă și a început să lucreze ca femeie de serviciu. Clienții ei au apreciat cu adevărat munca ei asiduă și atitudinea ei politicoasă. Soțul ei, în schimb, se simțea din ce în ce mai exclus. Din cauza problemei lui cu băutura, angajatorii nu au avut încredere în el și nu i-au dat de lucru.
Yulia adapted well to her new home, and she started working as a cleaner. Her clients really appreciated her hard work and her polite attitude. Her husband, on the other hand, felt more and more left out. Because of his drinking problem, employers did not trust him and would not give him work.
Într-o zi a început să țipe la Yulia. Apoi a început să o împingă. Țipetele și bătăile s-au înrăutățit, mai ales când era beat. Lui Yulia îi era frică pentru ea și pentru fiica ei, dar nu avea idee ce ar putea face.
One day he started yelling at Yulia. Then, he started pushing her. The shouting and beatings got worse, especially when he was drunk. Yulia was afraid for herself and her daughter, but she had no idea what she could do.
Când Yulia a ajuns în sfârșit la camera de urgență din spital cu un braț rupt, i-au spus că violența domestică este o problemă uriașă în Portugalia. I-au mai spus că este o infracțiune și ar trebui să anunțe poliția.
When Yulia finally had to go to the emergency room in the hospital with a broken arm, they told her that domestic violence was a huge problem in Portugal. They also said that it was a crime and she should report it to the police.
Yulia era epuizată și nu dorea ca fiica ei să crească într-o casă în care e martoră la violență în fiecare zi. Yulia și-a dat seama că semnele de abuz au existat tot timpul, chiar dacă au luat multe forme diferite.
Yulia was exhausted and did not want her little daughter to grow up in a home where she witnessed violence every day. Yulia realised that the signs of abuse had been there all along, even if it took many different forms.
Yulia s-a dus la un adăpost pentru femei, unde s-a simțit mai în siguranță cum nu s-a simțit de mult timp. Nu se mai simțise așa de când era trezită de sunetul păsărilor dimineața.
Yulia went to a women’s shelter, where she felt safer than she had in a long time. She had not felt like that since she was woken up by the sound of birds in the morning.
