Yulia, su marido y su hija pequeña vivían en un pequeño y tranquilo pueblo de Ucrania. A Yulia le encantaba despertarse todas las mañanas con el sonido de los pájaros. Nunca pensó que viviría lejos de casa o que no la despertaría el sonido de los pájaros por las mañanas.
Yulia, her husband, and their little daughter lived in a small, quiet village in Ukraine. Yulia loved being woken every morning by the sound of birds. She never thought she would live far away from home, or not be woken up by the sound of birds in the morning.
Su marido siempre se quejaba de no tener suficiente dinero y empezó a beber mucho. Decidieron probar suerte en Portugal. Quizá allí podrían ganar más dinero para construir una casa y conseguir un futuro mejor para su familia.
Her husband was always complaining about not having enough money and he began drinking heavily. They decided to try their luck in Portugal. Maybe there they could earn more money to build a house and make a better future for their family.
Yulia se adaptó bien a su nuevo hogar y empezó a trabajar como limpiadora. Sus clientes apreciaban mucho su trabajo y su actitud educada. Su marido, en cambio, se sentía cada vez más excluido. Debido a su problema con la bebida, los empleadores no confiaban en él y no le daban trabajo.
Yulia adapted well to her new home, and she started working as a cleaner. Her clients really appreciated her hard work and her polite attitude. Her husband, on the other hand, felt more and more left out. Because of his drinking problem, employers did not trust him and would not give him work.
Un día empezó a gritarle a Yulia. Luego, empezó a empujarla. Los gritos y los golpes empeoraron, sobre todo cuando estaba borracho. Yulia temía por ella y por su hija, pero no sabía qué hacer.
One day he started yelling at Yulia. Then, he started pushing her. The shouting and beatings got worse, especially when he was drunk. Yulia was afraid for herself and her daughter, but she had no idea what she could do.
Cuando Yulia por fin tuvo que acudir a urgencias en el hospital con un brazo roto, le dijeron que la violencia doméstica era un problema enorme en Portugal. También le dijeron que era un delito y que debería denunciarlo a la policía.
When Yulia finally had to go to the emergency room in the hospital with a broken arm, they told her that domestic violence was a huge problem in Portugal. They also said that it was a crime and she should report it to the police.
Yulia estaba agotada y no quería que su hija pequeña creciera en un hogar donde presenciaba violencia todos los días. Se dio cuenta de que las señales de maltrato habían estado ahí todo el tiempo, aunque se manifestaran de diferentes formas.
Yulia was exhausted and did not want her little daughter to grow up in a home where she witnessed violence every day. Yulia realised that the signs of abuse had been there all along, even if it took many different forms.
Yulia fue a un refugio para mujeres, donde se sintió más segura de lo que se había sentido en mucho tiempo. No se había sentido así desde cuando la despertaba el sonido de los pájaros por la mañana.
Yulia went to a women’s shelter, where she felt safer than she had in a long time. She had not felt like that since she was woken up by the sound of birds in the morning.
