ئێدسن له ئه‌نگۆلا له‌دایک بووه، ڕێک پاش ئه‌وه‌ی وڵاته‌که سه‌ربه‌خۆ بوو. ئه‌و کوڕێکی زۆر باڵابەرز بوو. له‌به‌ر باڵایه‌که‌ی ئه‌و ده‌رکه‌وتوو بوو. ئه‌و که‌سانه‌ی چه‌کیان ده‌دایه منداڵان تا وه‌ک سه‌رباز شه‌ڕ بکه‌ن له شه‌ڕی ناوه‌خۆ کوڕانی وه‌کو ئه‌ویان ده‌ویست.
Edson was born in Angola, just after the country became independent. He was a very tall boy. Because of his height he stood out. The people who were giving weapons to children to fight as soldiers in the civil war wanted boys like him.
دایکی ده‌ترسا بیبه‌ن، بۆیه بڕیاری دا بینێرێ له پرتوگال بژی له‌گه‌ڵ پورێکی. وا بیریکرده‌وه ئه‌و له‌وێ سه‌لامه‌ت ده‌بێت.
His mother was afraid they would take him, so she decided to send him to live in Portugal with an aunt. She thought he would be safe there.
له ده‌ستپێکدا زۆر زه‌حمه‌ت بوو، چونکه ئێدسن بیری که‌شه گه‌رمه‌که و خواردنه نه‌ریتیه‌که و، له هه‌مووشی زیاتر باوه‌ش و ماچه‌کانی دایکی ده‌کرد.
It was very difficult to begin with, as Edson missed the warm weather, the traditional food and, most of all, his mother’s hugs and kisses.
ئه‌و به‌باشی قسه‌ی به پرتوگالی نه‌ده‌کرد و لای زۆر زه‌حمه‌ت بوو که له وانه‌کانی و قسه‌ی هاوپۆله‌کانی تێبگات. نه‌یده‌زانی که ئایا بیرۆکه‌یه‌کی باش بووه که هاتۆته پرتوگال.
He did not speak Portuguese well and found it very hard to follow his classes and the conversations of his classmates. He wondered if it was a good idea to come to Portugal after all.
رۆژێک مامۆستایه‌ک سه‌رنجیدا که ئه‌و چه‌ند باشه له باسکەدا. ئه‌و په‌یوه‌ندی به تیمێکی باسکەوە کرد و زۆر سه‌رکه‌وتوو بوو. ئه‌و له قوتابخانه ناسرا و هاوڕێی په‌یداکرد. هه‌روه‌ها متمانه‌شی به‌خۆی زیاتر بوو.
One day a teacher noticed how good he was at basketball. He joined a basketball team and was very successful. He became popular at school and made friends. He also became more confident.
ئێستا که پێگه‌یشتووه، ئێدسن مه‌شق به منداڵه کۆچبه‌ره‌کان ده‌کات له‌گه‌ڵ که‌سانی تر که له مه‌ترسی ده‌رکردندان له کۆمه‌ڵگا. جارێک باڵاکه‌ی خستیه مه‌ترسی ئه‌وه‌ی ببێته سه‌ربازێکی منداڵ. ئێستا باڵاکه‌ی هێزی پێده‌دات تا یارمه‌تی که‌سانی تر بدات هه‌ست به سه‌لامه‌تی بکه‌ن.
Now that he is an adult, Edson trains refugee children and others at risk of being excluded from society. Once, his height put him in danger of becoming a child soldier. Now, his height gives him strength to help others feel safe.
