Edson nació en Angola, justo después de que el país se independizara. Era un niño muy alto. Destacaba por su altura. La gente que daba armas a los niños para que lucharan como soldados en la guerra civil quería chicos como él.
Edson was born in Angola, just after the country became independent. He was a very tall boy. Because of his height he stood out. The people who were giving weapons to children to fight as soldiers in the civil war wanted boys like him.
Su madre temía que se lo llevaran, así que decidió enviarlo a vivir a Portugal con una tía. Pensó que allí estaría seguro.
佢媽咪好怕啲人會帶走佢，所以決定要送佢去葡萄牙同阿姨一齊住。佢覺得佢喺嗰便會安全啲。
他母亲担心这些人会来抓他，所以她决定把他送到葡萄牙的一个阿姨家生活。她认为他在那里会比较安全。
His mother was afraid they would take him, so she decided to send him to live in Portugal with an aunt. She thought he would be safe there.
Al principio fue muy difícil, pues Edson extrañaba el clima cálido, la comida tradicional y, sobre todo, los abrazos y besos de su madre.
一開始嘅生活係好困難，因為埃德森好掛住好暖嘅天氣，傳統嘅嘢食，同埋最重要係佢媽咪嘅擁抱同錫錫。
刚开始他过得非常艰难，埃德森想念家乡温暖的天气、家乡菜，更重要的是母亲的拥抱和亲吻。
It was very difficult to begin with, as Edson missed the warm weather, the traditional food and, most of all, his mother’s hugs and kisses.
No hablaba bien portugués y le costaba mucho seguir las clases y las conversaciones de sus compañeros. Se preguntaba si, después de todo, había sido buena idea venir a Portugal.
He did not speak Portuguese well and found it very hard to follow his classes and the conversations of his classmates. He wondered if it was a good idea to come to Portugal after all.
Un día, un profesor se dio cuenta de lo bueno que era en el baloncesto. Se unió a un equipo de baloncesto y tuvo mucho éxito. Se hizo popular en el colegio e hizo amigos. También ganó confianza en sí mismo.
One day a teacher noticed how good he was at basketball. He joined a basketball team and was very successful. He became popular at school and made friends. He also became more confident.
Ahora que es adulto, Edson entrena a niños refugiados y a otras personas en riesgo de quedar marginadas de la sociedad. Antes, su estatura lo ponía en peligro de convertirse en niño soldado. Ahora, su estatura le da fuerza para ayudar a otros a sentirse seguros.
Now that he is an adult, Edson trains refugee children and others at risk of being excluded from society. Once, his height put him in danger of becoming a child soldier. Now, his height gives him strength to help others feel safe.
